The Woolpack is based in the heart of the village of Almondbury located across the road from All Hallows Church. For over 300 years, up until the 17th century, the Monday market held in the Parish church was the centre of all activity in Huddersfield and the surrounding parishes. It was this market that gave The Woolpack it's name, as it was in this building that was used for packing the wool. There is still evidence of this within the building. The loft is separated into small sections, each with fire-proof blocking so in the case of a small fire not all stock would be lost. The Barn to the rear, which is now converted into a function room, was used for horses delivering the wool. It's not known when The Woolpack first became a public house but it has taken on many a different form to get to the current style. The most recent alternations were to the rear of the building. The old disused Barn was converted into a restaurant. This also led to the toilets swapping places, sending many a confused gent into the ladies! Prior to this the upstairs Function room was given a renovation to make it safe and a bar was built for providing an extra service to private parties. Around this time the downstairs bar was moved from the centre of the room to its current location. It used to be in the centre of the room when the lounge was separated into two rooms. |
