A fierce game at the Woolpack tonight as a battle of wills and mental strength prevailed throughout. With barmaid Sophie and boyfriend Matt making their debuts at the table they were the obvious target for some of the banter, namely from Dan, AndyP and Tim – all of who couldn’t seem to play cards very well! Maybe this extra pressure got to the young couple as they were the first two players out, although Sophie lost in the hand that saw short stacked Ian, triple up and become a top contender.

Ian, along with Graham (who after winning two early hands earned the nickname ‘Rooney’) and Tony were the clear leaders with Andy P the next player out at the hands of one of the big three.

With Graham hitting every straight in site, and Ian bullying his way through, there seemed little chance for the shorter stacks and after a really bad beat, early front runner Tony was out. He was followed by Dan whose ridiculous all-in (4000) blind bet failed against Ian, and then Tim, who had let the Stella Artois get the better of his judgement!

Two players who had sat relatively quietly all night now had to start making edge ways, that being Anthony and Angie. Neither really stood a chance against the mountain of chips held by Graham and Ian and they both ended up losing.

Now at heads up, Ian took an early aggressive stance until a very big hand saw him scared off by Graham’s all in where Ian was convinced his opponent had hit a straight, to which he disagreed! This was the edge Graham needed and slowly Ian lost confidence and patience and ended up settling for second place.

MOVEMBER SUCCESS

The Woolpack Movember team raised a total of £220 by growing great (and terrible) moustaches throughout November. On Saturday 26th, the Movember Party was a great success with games, cocktails and furry upper-lips to be seen.

In the games, the downing Guinness contest brought some hilarity and spillages, especially from the girls!  Andy P shocked and amazed at his after-eight eating skills where everybody else was left with melted chocolate on their faces while trying to manouver the sticky treat from their forehead to mouth without touching it! Then Davey G showed some incredible flexibility as he could pick anything up off the floor with only his mouth – the bottle top was brilliant!

To round the night off, some awards were given, Dan had been voted to have his mo shaved into a Hitler tash (which was popular at football the next day), and the quiz was won by a dubious team of Andy, Will, Jack and Dave.

The award winners were:
Mr Movember – Alan Ball
Miss Movember – Sophie & Olivia
Playground Prowler – Dave Davidson (Bob Marley)
Sportsmanship (non-starter) – Steve T

A big thanks to everyone who grow Mo’s and donated. Well done!

Poker Report 7-Dec

After last months enormous game it was a little disappointing to have 9 players at this months game. But it was 9 good players all eager to win, and right from the off Martin and Ian seemed to have the most hunger taking the early hands. Neither player however seemed to be taking a big lead, and both Mark and Tony took decent sized pots to keep them going. On the other side of things, Andy P was struggling with a short stack when he got pocket Queens which he pushed only for Ian to catch a full house with his pocket 3′s. Poor Andy was out and Ian was now chip leader.

The blinds then went up and the action got going. An exciting hand between father and son, Stewart and Martin, saw Stewart’s bluff get re-bluffed by Martin, who was then out-bluffed by Stewart, brilliant! Stewart then got a little excited and got caught out on a bluff by Dan, and lost a lot of chips.

The next players out were Tony who was beaten by a now confident and cocky Dan, and then Ian who was sucked into a big hand with Angie and Martin, which Martin won. It was now Martin and Dan with big stacks and they were bossing hands all over the table as Stewart, Mark and then Angie fell.

Down to the final three it got tense between Martin, Dan and Anthony who was now chip leader after taking a big gamble against both Dan and Martin and winning both times. Martin was down in third when he walked into Dan’s 6 card straight, and he was convinced Dan was bluffing so went all in and lost.

At heads-up Dan took the early lead, bluffing the first hand with the famous 5,3, and then holding a full house from the turn. But he soon began to throw chips away as Anthony would throw a huge 3000 bet every now and again and Dan would fold with nothing. As soon as Dan began to get some chips back, Anthony would hit a strong hand and take them all back on mass. The final hand was the great 5, 3 for Dan again. He hit the 5 on the flop, bet big, but Ant put him all in. Despite being convinced he was behind he called and lost to Anthony’s pocket Queens. It was a great performance by Ant and his first win of the year. But second place was enough for Dan to move to the top of the table by one point over Mark with one game to play, Sunday 18th December. Exciting stuff!
